My Little Pony is an animated TV series based on the toy line from Hasbro. The series and toys were geared to girls and did remarkably well. Over the years the series has developed a huge fan base. Part of the fan base is very unexpected it is a male fan base. Not just little boys but teen aged and adult men who love My Little Pony. These fans have been give them name of Bronies.
The Brony sub-culture is much larger than one would expect. There are meetings of the Bronies and conventions called BronyCon. A recent BronyCon at the Meadowlands attracted 4000 attendees. Many of the BronyCon attendees like at many other conventions of the type come dressed in costume. They were there for the fun of the convention. Bronies have gotten a lot of negative exposure in the media and it isn't surprising but it is sad. They are there because they love something and are proud of it. There are websites and discussion boards created by and for Bronies.
The Bronie sub-culture has taken the creator Laura Faust and Hasbro by surprise. They have both embraced it and Faust makes appearances at the BronyCons and do the actors providing the voices of the characters in the animated TV shows and movies. Hasbro naturally embraces Bronies, they are in the business of selling toys and collectables after all and Bronies are customers.
Bronies say they like the shows and movies because they are colorful and innocent. They are looking for something in My Little Pony that they do not find in the world we live in. Is there anything wrong in that?
