KerPlunk

I went to a yard sale the other day it was at the home of a hoarder. One of the many things he hoarded was old board games and toys.  I was instantly transported back to my childhood. As I was going through his games I found  one I had always wanted. It was hands down. When I was a kid I thought is was so cool. Then I found Mousetrap yet another game I had once thought to be really fun. I went to play at a friends house one afternoon and he had Mousetrap. We played it and I was so disappointed. I continued going through his piles of games and found Mystery Date. I was very tempted to buy it but he thought some of the pieces might be missing. I then came across one of my favorite games form when I was a kid KerPlunk! I was so excited I loved KerPlunk! If you never heard of KerPlunk it was a lot of fun. The game made by Ideal Toy Company consisted of an acrylic tube with small holes in it that you would slide colored plastic sticks. Then you would drop marbles into the tube. at the bottom of the tube there was a base with numbers and a small opening. The way the game was played was the players would one by one pull out the plastic sticks and marbles would fall to the bottom of the tube in the numbered areas. at the end of the game the player with the least amount of marbles was the winner. It was loud and fun!
I was so close to buying the game but had to pass on it as i just didn't envision myself inviting people over to play KerPlunk!

"Superman" Building to Go Dark

The building known as the "Superman" building in downtown Providence is about to go dark. The building built in 1927 as the Industrial National Bank Building was at one time the tallest building in New England. The 428 foot art deco edifice is about to go completely dark as its sole tenant Bank of America is vacating the space for more modern offices. The current owners of the building High Rock Development has decided to let the building go dark after BofA moves out rather than "glut" the market with new office space bring down the square foot value of available office space. The 85 year old building one of the most distinctive parts of the Providence skyline called the "Superman" building because of its similar look to the "Daily Planet" in the old "Superman" series.
Providence's economy has be devastated in the current economic decline with a very high (9%) unemployment rate. The darkening of the building and its 27th floor beacon are just another example sad times. High Rock Development would like to get the okay and tax credits to turn the historic office tower into luxury apartments. If there is no business who will be buying these luxury apartments?

Gotta Love Goodwill

Everyone has been to a Goodwill Store. They are the largest thrift shop chain in this country and they are branching out though out the world. Founded in Boston in 1902 by the Morgan Methodist Chapel, Goodwill is now the go to thrift shop of thrift shoppers.
Not all Goodwill stores are the same do they have one thing in common stuff. If you need some stuff this is the place for you. When one enters a Goodwill Store one shouldn't be looking for something but look at everything. You never know what you just might find. Because they depend on donations you never know what you may find. I once found a Le Corbusier chair for $12. It is always a crap shoot. Look at everything and you just may find something. Personally I tend to avoid certain sections of a Goodwill. I never look at shoes or under things. Somethings are just taboo. The toy section also freaks me out. Now the dish section is always a lot of fun as well as the book section.
Goodwill Industry the parent company is a really big business. The executives make the same kinds of salaries as any large business does. The hierarchy has declared war on smaller charities and their collection boxes. The clothing donated to Goodwill that doesn't get sold in their stores is eventually sold off to companies that in turn resell it for several times more than they have paid for it in third world countries.
So there is a double headed coin aspect to Goodwill. It is a great place for finding a bargain at times but it isn't all rosy.
